Chapter 4: Main Street Home

What happens when the plan you prayed for… isn’t the plan God intends to use?


Owning land certainly felt like the finish line.


After years of praying, fasting, and watching God provide in unmistakable ways, the members of Christ Community Church Mooresville found themselves standing on 17 acres of debt‑free land just a mile from their Highway 21 campus. It felt like the long‑awaited answer. Architects were brought in. Builders were consulted. Blueprints were drawn. For the first time, the church could picture their building, something permanent, rooted, and built from the ground up.


And yet, as the plans took shape, there was a quiet sense that God might be leading them in another direction.


The economy was booming. Costs were climbing. Site work alone felt overwhelming. Then COVID hit, and everything stopped. Construction prices skyrocketed, timelines collapsed, and what once felt exciting now felt impossible. Even the modest building they hoped to construct wouldn’t meet the church’s needs for long. At the Highway 21 campus, they were already holding two services and facing the reality of a third.


To move forward would mean pressing ahead in their own strength. So the church paused, again.


Instead of forcing a good idea forward, they chose to surrender. They laid their carefully drawn plans before God. They prayed. They fasted. And they asked the harder question:

“God, is this actually Your will?”


One founding member put words to what many were feeling:

“Nobody likes to hear God say no, especially when you want something. But He had better plans. And He always does.”


As the leaders explored other possibilities, including selling the land, they encountered a new obstacle. Fourteen of the 17 acres carried a historic deed restriction dating back generations. The land had been donated for ministry use only: a church, a school, a camp. It couldn’t be sold freely, which meant the church couldn’t access its value to pursue another option.


Once again, the path forward appeared blocked.


The elders reached out to surviving members of the original donor family to ask whether the restriction could be lifted. The first answer was no.


So they prayed again.


One elder suggested writing a letter, an honest explanation of the church’s situation, its growing needs, and a sincere desire to steward every resource for God’s Kingdom. Pastor David wrote the letter. Soon after, the family agreed to a phone call.


It was one of the most nerve‑wracking conversations anyone could remember.


As Pastor David shared the full story, the growth, the limitations, the unexpected opportunity, he said, “If the deed restriction is released, every dollar from the sale of your grandparents’ land will go directly toward a new church home, continuing the legacy they hoped for.”


The family prayed. And then they said yes. The deed restriction was lifted. God had made a way.


With the land now able to be sold, the elders continued seeking direction for a new home. Then one elder mentioned a place everyone had driven past countless times without much thought, an old shopping center on Main Street.


The owner, Mr. Teeter, was in his 80s, a believer who loved Jesus and felt ready to release the last shopping center his family owned. When he met with the elders, he didn’t hesitate. He fully supported the idea of the space becoming a church.


As the details came together, it became clear this wasn’t merely a good option. It was God’s provision, again.


The church would receive four times the space they had initially planned to build, for about half the cost, right in the heart of Mooresville. Even more remarkably, the property included nine tenants whose leases would help offset expenses. There was no mistaking it. This was God’s church, God’s way.


For the next year, the church prayed through renovations. It felt like planting a church all over again, 250 people preparing to step into a space far larger than anything they could have imagined.


When the doors finally opened, God answered in abundance. Attendance grew quickly, but more importantly, lives were changed. People came to know Christ. Baptisms followed. New ministries were launched. Community deepened. 


Over the last 20 years, Christ Community Church Mooresville has learned this truth again and again: the church doesn’t belong to us; it belongs to God. Every season, every move, every decision has flowed from the same posture—open hands, willing hearts, and trust in His will above our own.


From a school, to a rented building, to owned land, to a shopping center on Main Street, this journey is just one part of the story God is still telling.


The best is yet to come.


As long as we continue to surrender to Him, God will keep using His church to impact lives in Mooresville and beyond. And as we look toward the next 20 years, we do so with gratitude, expectation, and joy, knowing that you are part of what God is doing here.


This is His story. And we are so excited to be part of it.
