Chapter 2: The Portable Church

Before the sun rises, your alarm sounds. You grab your keys, whisper a prayer, and head out into the quiet morning. The parking lot at East Mooresville Intermediate School is still dark when you pull in, but a few familiar headlights roll in beside you. You smile. The team is here.

You back the trailer into place, and carts glide out. The hum of teamwork begins. Chairs are counted and lined in neat rows. The stage takes shape one cable at a time. Kids’ classrooms come alive with bins of crayons, toys, name tags, and baby gates. A leader prays over the gym. You glance at your watch. There’s time for a deep breath.

It’s still quiet, but you can already imagine the sound of voices, the laughter of children, and the swell of worship that will soon fill the room. On Friday, you were passing out flyers for the next sermon series in the community, and you wonder if you’ll see new faces from the neighborhood today.

It wasn’t fancy, and it wasn’t easy. It was portable. It was faithful. And because God was present in every detail, it was always enough.

The founding members could have never imagined that this rhythm — show up, set up, worship, tear down, repeat — would lead to the church we are today. But week after week, God met them. Still finding their place after being planted by the sending church in Huntersville, they kept asking, “Lord, what would You have our DNA be?” They sought their “puzzle piece” in the larger body of Christ for this season and this place. The vision that emerged looked like what we see from the early church in the book of Acts: an authentic community that cared for one another, shared meals, gathered in homes, and raised their children together in the way of Jesus.

The church plant didn’t just stand; it began to take root. They rented a house on Main Street for office space, but soon it became more than that. It hosted women’s ministry gatherings, band practice, and youth group. Small groups met in homes across town. What began with a few families from CCC Huntersville had become Christ Community Church Mooresville, an independent church, a circle of friends, and a family expanding across generations.

The church wasn’t just growing; it was becoming known in the community. So much so that a couple, who did not even attend CCC at the time, noticed the need for the church to have a permanent space. Moved by God, this anonymous couple invested $100,000 to support the vision and help the church find a home.

Faced with this unexpected provision, the members responded by seeking the Lord together. They chose to fast and pray, thanking Him for His kindness, asking where He was leading, and lifting open hands for what would come next.

The portable church season was both busy and deeply rewarding, but the church was ready for something new. Yet through every step — at East Mooresville Intermediate School, on Highway 21, and now on Main Street — God has always been present. And we continue to invite His presence into the heart of our church family.

As we remember what God has done, we invite every member of CCC, whether you’ve been here two months or twenty years, to join us in prayer for what God wants to do next. On the 20th of each month leading up to the anniversary in April, we will pray and fast like those early members did before finding their next home. We do this to remember there is nothing we can do without Him.

This Month’s Prayer Points

  • Grow my desire to know You and become like You. Matthew 5:6

  • Help me remember there is nothing so fulfilling as being with You. Psalm 42:1–2

  • Make us a church that is hungry for Your Word and Your Presence. Begin a revival in our hearts, where nothing satisfies us except you. Give us an expectation for what You are going to do in us and through us to reach our community. Jeremiah 29:11–13
