November 28th - Day 2 | Promises: An Advent Family Devotional

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” - Genesis 3:15

17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ…19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”

- Romans 5:17, 19

Can you imagine what Adam and Eve must have felt like the moment they realized they had been duped?

They had the perfect life, perfect jobs, perfect bodies, the perfect marriage, perfect health, a perfect environment, and a perfect relationship with God. They took walks with God every evening in the cool of the day just chatting and fellowshipping with Him. What a life!

All of it came crashing down the moment they bought into Satan’s lie. Their perfect life was shattered as death entered the world. Their perfect marriage turned sour as they began to play the blame game. They felt the need to cover their perfect bodies. There was enmity between them and the rest of creation. Work would now replace their perfect jobs. Their connection with God was broken by their sinful choice. As God told them about sin’s permanent affects, I’m sure they felt hopeless.

I’m sure they wondered how in the world things would ever be ok again. In the midst of explaining the permanent consequences of their sins, God chose to give them and all their descendants a promise.

One day, a descendant of theirs would crush the head of the serpent. Even though the serpent would strike his heel, this One would stomp Satan and break the power of sin. As you hang your ornament on the tree, remember, even when sin took it’s permanent effect, God promised permanent restoration through Jesus.
